Learning with Prabhupada

Recently I started using classes from Srila Prabhupada as studying material for my English students. My job is to explain these classes in simple words, so they can pick-up the ideas and vocabulary and later be able to understand the classes proper.

In this process, I have to naturally study each class very deeply, so I can get the essential points and flow of ideas to write the materials for the course. This is giving me another opportunity to understand the genius of Srila Prabhupada in formulating these classes. He is able to explain points we normally struggle so much to understand and to explain in such a simple and elegant way that one can only be amazed. This is again just reinforcing my conviction that to try to understand Krsna Consciousness by studying “advanced” books, without a very long and deep study of the philosophy Srila Prabhupada explains in his classes and books is an exercise of futility. The ones who think Srila Prabhupada gave only the ABCD are just paving their way in the direction of spiritual illiteracy.

The self-effulgent acarya

Many senior devotees believe a powerful acarya is about to appear in this world. I don’t know from where this idea comes if there is some prophecy or reference, but I heard the same idea from quite a number of different sources.

We can see that after the disappearance of Srila Prabhupada there was a lot of darkness and confusion in our society, similar to what happened after the disappearance of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura. Past acaryas alert that after the disappearance of a powerful acarya, a period of confusion ensues. Srila Prabhupada created a worldwide movement practically from scratch, with the help of disciples who were quite young and inexperienced by the time he left the planet. He left all the philosophy of Krsna Consciousness in his books, but at the time he left devotees were still struggling to understand them. Even nowadays we are still struggling, what to say about the first days.
What is impressive in this story is not the problems that happened, but how our movement was capable of remaining a unified mission despite all the chaos. The disciples left by Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura were more advanced in many aspects, but still, they could not preserve the unity of the mission after the disappearance of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta. Somehow, by Krsna’s mercy, the disciples of Srila Prabhupada were able to accomplish this difficult mission, and this simple fact is more significant than any shortcoming that may have existed.

Early marriages and Vedic culture

One aspect of Vedic culture and classical Indian culture that many may find uncomfortable is the idea of early marriages. It’s mentioned in many passages that in Vedic culture girls would most of the time marry at a very early age. 16 years is mentioned as an ideal age (as Srila Prabhupada mentions in several passages), but in practice as soon as a girl would attain puberty the parents would start looking for a boy and would try to marry her as soon as possible.

Of course, this is an idea that sounds very strange to the modern mind. The idea nowadays is that ladies should marry later. When people hear about ladies marrying at an early age (especially to boys who are significantly older), images of exploitation and abuse come into mind. In fact, it’s quite common not only in India but also in other countries to hear stories of girls who are painfully exploited after being forced into marriages with older men.

However, if we study this topic from a historic perspective, we can see that these younger marriages were common in most societies up to one century ago. In Europe, most girls would marry not much after puberty, and most of the time to boys who would be significantly older. The same could be observed in most other societies, in Africa, Middle East, the East, and even in aboriginal societies. The idea of ladies marrying later is actually a recently new phenomenon.

Loving Krsna and mistreating His devotees

Imagine the following scene. You meet your old best friend Jack that you don’t see since high school. You become emotional in seeing your friend for so many years. You run in his direction, saying: “Jack, It’s me, I’m so happy to see you!”. However, as you get close, you notice he is not happy at all to see you. As a result, you stop. You look around and see some small children scattered here and there. One has hurt his leg, the other one is crying. In your rush to embrace your friend, you carelessly knocked down all these children, his children! How do you think Jack feels?

Sometimes, in our rush to get things done for Krsna, we treat his devotees carelessly and even hurt a few of them in the process. This was of course more common in the past, but it still happens a lot. Usually, the more active a place is, the more it tends to happen. This is like getting close to Krsna by knocking down his children, it doesn’t work very well.
Actually, the way one treats others is one of the most reliable ways to understand one’s level of advancement in spiritual life. As one’s ego becomes more under control, his awareness of others as parts and parcels of Krsna grows.

– Who is Bipin Bihari Goswami?

Bipin Bihari Goswami, the initiating spiritual master of Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura is a personality very difficult to understand based on historical facts alone. The ones who are self-realized souls and can see in the spiritual platform can probably understand him, but one who tries to understand based solely on historical facts will certainly become bewildered. Some sources connected with the Gaudiya Matha depict Bipin Bihari Goswami in a very negative light, while others do the precise opposite. Like in other cases, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

Are we ever going to live in space?

When I was small, I used to read books by Isaac Asimov. He wrote many stories about how the advancement of technology would allow humanity to explore and colonize space in just a few decades. It was not just me, since the 1950s, science fiction has been selling the idea of space exploration. Generations grew up believing that humanity would soon be able to colonize space. Many books were written on the subject but it never really happened. Apart from a few manned missions to our closest satellite and the construction of a small space station in lower orbit, not much happened. It doesn’t seem we are much closer to explore space than we were in the 1960s.

How to cook when we don’t have time to cook

One of the most fundamental changes we need to do in order to be able to maintain a healthy diet is to start to cook what we eat. As long as we are eating outside, we are going to be eating what everyone else eats, and in most cases, it will not be very healthy.

People in previous generations would understand the importance of home food for one’s health, and therefore the mother or grandmother would spend hours every day cooking for the whole family. This cooking was an expression of love and care that would maintain the family healthy and united. Even if it’s just a couple or two friends living together, they can take turns in cooking. Even if someone is alone, it’s still possible to cook simple dishes without spending much time.

Health: Carbohydrates, resistant starches, and soluble fibers

One important information to consider when researching different types of food is both the GI and the GL. Both are information that can be easily found on the Internet. GI (glycemic index) means how fast the blood glucose can rise after eating, and the GL (glycemic load) is based on the total amount of carbs in the food, which determines how long the spike will be. The more refined a food is and the longer it is cooked the highest will be the GI.

The GI is a scale that goes from 0 to 100. Zero would mean that the food doesn’t raise the blood sugar at all (the list includes basically only water) and 100 means that the food raises the blood glucose as much as pure glucose (which is the theoretical maximum). Foods with a low GI (less than 55) raise the glucose gently, while foods with a medium (above 55) or high GI (above 70) cause violent spikes of glucose and insulin that can be harmful.

Predictions for the next 9500 years

Many prophets make predictions about the future. Sometimes such predictions are remarkably accurate, sometimes not so much. From the Vedas, we can understand that spiritually advanced persons are capable of connecting with the eternal time and thus they gain an understanding of the past and future. For such a person, time is just like a movie they already know the end. Unfortunately, I’m not one of them, but still, I can make some predictions based on common sense. If you are interested in the way I see how the future will unfold, you can continue reading.

Levels of reality in the Vedic Universe

Many things we take as irrevocable facts can actually be different or even opposite in different contexts. For example, we all learn that water boils at 100 degrees celsius and this can easily be proved by just boiling some water and checking the temperature with a thermometer, right? Well, not exactly. For most of us, the water will not boil at 100 degrees, but at 99.5, 98, 95, or even 87, according to the altitude one lives. One would have a hard time cooking a meal on top of Mount Everest, for example, since there the water boils at just 68 degrees!

Things are also different according to the point of view. For example, we understand that the earth is round. However, for one who is standing on the ground, it appears quite flat. Since the earth is so big, the curvature can only be seen if one goes quite high. Although the earth is round, islands and continents are not, therefore one who lives on an island like Mauritius or Seychelles actually lives in a flat structure that is part of a round planet.
